About Us
Following the closure of the village post office and village shop in March 2003 a small committee was formed to start up a community shop. The National Trust were asked for premises, questionnaires were sent out and funds were raised.
Members of the community with the support of the National Trust formed a working party, which included many of the villagers. Some offered their professional skills, Dan the architect did the drawings, Rod took care of the electrics, while Kenny, Terry and especially Keith, invested many hours of their spare time ripping downwalls, building new ones, insulating the roof and much more. The less skilled cleared rubbish, painting, and keeping the workers fed and supplied with tea. Dorte's Danish meatballs soon became legendary.
Materials were bought second hand or donated. The floor which started life as a squash court, was laid by the girls (Denny, Emma, Margaret, Gabriella and Isabelle). The shelving started life in a Scottish bookshop and was donated and installed by Dave.
The Shop opened in September 2004 and is managed and run entirely by volunteers from both the village and the surrounding area. It has become a place to meet and have coffee, hold meetings, workshops, lectures and exhibit local artists' work. It has all been made possible through the hard work and commitment of many people who have offered their skills and precious time
